Best Behind the Scenes Sports Documentaries to Watch

Fly on the wall sports documentary series are a real hit at the moment as not only do they produce some great drama, but we also get a real sense of what goes on behind closed doors at professional sports teams.

With so much on the line at the highest level of sport, it is unsurprising that things can get heated at times, something which makes for great television. We also see how some players and teams handle that intense pressure put on them in their respective sport.

Here are three sports documentaries that are available today on various stream platforms and are a must-watch.

All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur | Amazon Prime

All or Nothing have produced some fantastic series across a wide range of sports, including football, soccer and rugby union. Their latest instalment follows the fortunes of Tottenham Hotspur in England in the early stages of their 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

The documentary producers struck gold on this series as there was a controversial managerial change during filming as Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino at the club. It was fascinating to watch how the chairman came to the decision and how the players reacted to working under a different manager.

Mourinho is one of the biggest managerial characters in football. He dubbed himself the ‘Special One’ when he first moved to England to take over as manager of Chelsea. Naturally, a lot of this documentary centres around the Portuguese man but that makes for blockbuster television.

Alex Smith: Project 11 | ESPN

Two years ago, Alex Smith suffered a horrific injury in an NFL match between Washington Football Team and Houston Texans. The Washington QB broke his tibia and fibula in his right leg.

Project 11 follows Smith’s remarkable road to recovery which really did have some rocky moments. At one stage, the NFL player was fighting for his life but thankfully came through.

This is a great time to watch this documentary as Smith is now back in the NFL as a starting quarterback. He recently produced career-best numbers for Washington in a game against the Detroit Lions. His side are +180 in the betting to win the NFC East, which would see them reach the playoffs. This would be some way for him to cap off his comeback year in the sport.

The Test: A New Era For Australia’s Team | Amazon Prime

The Australian national cricket team were involved in one of the darkest moments in their history in 2018 when they were guilty of cheating in a game against South Africa. The Test documents how the team bounced back from that incident and became the number one team in the world again.

You don’t need to be a big cricket fan to enjoy this documentary. It focuses on how new head coach Justin Langer brought integrity and pride back into his team. Langer played for the Baggy Greens during one of their most successful eras in the sport so the players really take on board the messages he communicates.

As ever, with documentaries like this, we also get to see what the players get up to outside of cricket and there is a fascinating story around one of the players’ love for coffee.

Enjoy watching all three of the above series at your leisure. There are sure to be many more interesting sports documentaries to come in the near future as it is a trend which is proving to be very popular.
